I produced a show from 2SER Breakfast Radio about modern poetry in Australia today. I have attended one poetry slam, which was hosted by Macquarie University's Grapeshot. My favourite moment was when everyone clicked their fingers instead of clapping.
Our guest for the segment, Assoc. Prof Paul Dawson was funny and engaging talent. I contacted several possible guests (who all replied yes, they could come on the show) but I choose Paul because of his powerfully angry poetry. Check it out here.
There are heaps of modern poets with mainstream audiences that I can recommend. My two favourites are Canadian Rupi Kaur and Brit Kate Tempest, who also wrote a great book, the bricks that built the houses. I am going to review that one soon.
