"Community in Kakuma refugee camp inspires linguists"

I wrote a blog post on linguists working in a refugee camp in Northern Kenya. This was completed while doing work experience with CoEDL (also known as the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language). This is an academic unit based at the ANU and affiliated with several other prestigious universities around the world. It supports linguistics to investigate the shape and evolution of language; and discover how language is processed and learned.

I spent a week with the Communications director Leanne, who taught me a lot! I really appreciated her generosity in mentoring me. The article written here is really a joint effort between the two of us.

In particular, Leanne taught me the importance of being culturally sensitive in your work and interactions. I know I will need to constantly learn and challenge my own presumptions in order to do this.

You can find my foray into public relations here.
